Family history
Earth natives, Robert's family can trace their lineage back hundreds of years. His family have, for as long as anyone knows, farmed sheep in the hills and fields of Wales in the eastern British Isles.
Education
Robert excelled at school, his desire to escape the farming lifestyle of his forebears pushing him to do everything he could to enhance his application to Starfleet Academy.
Entering the Academy at the first attempt, Robert applied himself to his studies. His initial desire to enter the security track was stymied by his less-than-stellar physical fitness, so he changed his goal and aimed to complete his Academy training in the engineering track.
Engineering school was a new level of challenge, and Robert struggled at times with the demands of some of the more advanced theoretical concepts.Forging onwards, he graduated in the top half of his class and completed multiple courses in starship design and weapon systems operations, all the better to enhance his applications for an exploratory posting on graduation.
