Family history
Maren (pronounced so that it rhymes with Darren and Karen) was raised in a typical family unit and parented by two J'naii scientists named Nikar and Judaii.

At the age of 12, Maren faced criminal charges for allegedly identifying as female. After being cleared, Maren was brought before the panel again the following year, accused of identifying as male.

In seven separate trials, between the ages of 12 and 19, Maren was never convicted. However, the leaders of the J'naii felt that there had been too many incidents and that Maren must be a deviant of some kind, so a special warrant was issued from the civic chamber to detain Maren without charges, until it could be determined what kind of psychotectic therapy was needed.

Maren has no criminal record on the J'naii homeworld. No concrete evidence was ever found, all previous charges failed to result in a conviction, and no new charges were ever brought. Yet, this individual was held for almost two years and was only released after undergoing a less targeted form of psychotectic therapy that was once prescribed for all deviants, before the J'naii perfected the current procedure.

Most patients who are "guilty" of gender identity confess and tell everyone how grateful they are to be cured after their treatment. However, upon Maren's release, this one only said, "I feel as well as I always have. I am not sick, and I never was."

It is unknown if Maren never had a gender identity or if this one simply said that because the treatments failed.

Because of these experiences, Maren finds being described by gender pronouns even more offensive than most J'naii and will not even allow the use of words like "hish" and "shim", as they imply having both genders, instead of a complete absense of gender.

The pronoun used in the J'naii language translates as "one", so whenever a pronoun is absolutely necessary, Maren prefers the use of the phrase "this one". However, in most cases, Maren's name can be used or sentences can be rearranged to avoid pronouns.

Enlisted crew members do still address Maren as "Sir", however, as the word's usage in Starfleet is sufficiently gender-neutral, in spite of its origins.
Education
-Graduated from J'naii education system

-Received medical doctorate from Starfleet Medical, specializing in reconstructive surgery

- Shows a marked personal interest in gender reassignment surgery

"As a member of a species without gender, I find the ability of humans to identify with a gender, especially one other than their biological gender, quite intriguing." -Dr. Maren

Medical profile
Medical history sealed by J'naii authorities -- it is only known that Maren has undergone psychotectic treatments, which do not cause any long-term damage

Scans show several old injuries, including two broken bones, that are fully healed and appear to have received proper medical attention, but the academy medical officer chose not to enter the stories of how they happened into the official record, as the accounts given by Maren were implausible.

Maren has since given other explanations, but they were not recorded either, as a Betazoid was able to sense that they were simply better excuses created by someone who now has the medical knowledge to create more believable false accounts.

These attempts at falsification have not been held against Maren, as this one is believed to have been the victim of abuse. Lying to protect one's abusers is typical behavior and should be handled by a counselor, not a board of inquiry.
Other
Typical J'naii features, short "pixie cut" hair

The website and the ODN are no longer separate entities. No jumping from one site to the other to get information. We have added to our technological distinctiveness to become one. The process of rebuilding the front-end is still ongoing. Making "a" website... that's easy. Making a website that uses all our content over decades... that's hard.
