Family history
Gary Waring was a Security Officer for the Federation Council until he retired, and Karen Waring was a little known (but talented) singer, content to raise her children and sing in small clubs with bands, choirs, and rarely as a solo performer. Gary's history of service to the Federation inspired his children, who all enlisted in Starfleet academy as soon as they could.
Education
After finishing 5th in his class in High School, Alden immediately applied to Starfleet Academy. He had coasted through school on charm and quick wit, so it came as a shock when he failed his first entrance exam. He took a year off, and studied incessantly, discovering a passion for engineering he had previously not known, and passed his exam on the second try.
